Winter Preperation Checklist

North Hills Raleigh real estateIn the last few posts, our North Hills Raleigh real estate company, Roark Premier Team, has been discussing the importance of getting your home winterized and ready for cold weather. Doing so can help you sell your home quicker, as potential home buyers will realize how well kept and warm your home is during the coldest time of year.

Today, our North Hills Raleigh real estate team offers a few more tips to get the outside of your home ready for winter!

Winter Preparation Tasks | North Hills Raleigh Real Estate

According to bobvila.com, the following tasks should be done in order to ensure your home and belongings are ready to face the cold weather to come:

  • Bring all seasonal tools inside and spray them with a coating of lightweight oil to prevent rust.
  • Stock up your supply of ice melt or sand so you can get your steps, walkways, and the driveway ready for home showings during winter weather.
  • Move your snow shovels to the front of the garage or shed so you can get to them easily, as you need them.
  • Sharpen your ice chopper and inspect snow shovels to make sure they’re ready for another season of work.
  • Winterize lawn mower.

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning

  • Bleed valves on any hot-water radiators to increase heating efficiency by releasing air that may be trapped inside.
  • Check fireplace for drafts. If it’s cold despite the damper being closed, the damper itself may be warped, worn, or rusted. Consider installing a Chimney Balloon into the flue to air seal the area tightly.
  • Check that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order.
  • Clean or replace the air filter in your furnace for maximum efficiency and improved indoor air quality.
  • Inspect all exposed ducts in basement, attic, and crawl spaces. Use a sealant to fill in any leaks.
  • Flush a hot water heater tank to remove sediment, and check the pressure relief valve to make sure it’s in proper working order.
  • Consider switching to a programmable thermostat that will help save on energy costs.
  • Inspect the firebox and flue system to ensure that they’re clean. Also check for cracks that could induce a fire.
  • Install foam-insulating sheets behind outlets and switch plates on exterior walls to reduce outside airflow.
  • Switch all fans to reverse or the clockwise position. This will allow them to blow air that's warm and enhance energy efficiency.
  • Remove air conditioners from windows or cover them with insulated liners. This helps prevent drafts.
