Naturally the NC State Fair is a time-honored and absolutely enormous event. In fact, it attracts over a million people a year to the Raleigh, NC area. The outstanding facilities, fun attractions and family friendly atmosphere are just a few of the reasons that it is such a popular event.

It’s a time-honored tradition in the fall of the year, after the plethora of smaller, county fairs have already chosen their contest winners. The winners of local, county fairs subsequently get to go on and compete in the larger, state fair. But if you are looking for a family-friendly, outdoor spring event, look no further.

One of the newer attractions to Raleigh, NC is the North Carolina Ag Festival, which has been held in Raleigh for the past three years or so. It’s a free event and most of the event attractions are free, with a few exceptions. It’s scheduled on May 17th - 19th in 2013. It’s essentially a smaller version of the North Carolina State Fair, but with some advantages that the state fair doesn’t offer.

One attractive feature that the NC Ag Festival offers that the state fair does not offer t is that wine sales are allowed. Actually, there is a food, wine and beer expo for those who like to savor the variety of flavors that North Carolina has to offer.

Of course, the festival offers all of the attractions that you would expect, like live music, great food, children’s activities and events that generally celebration of North Carolina’s agricultural heritage. In other words, it’s a great time for all.

The Dorton Arena features such events as a muscle car show, roller derby and BMX contest series. In the grandstand, there will be a draft horse pull, a tractor pull, and a garden tractor pull.

Even very young children will have adequate entertainment as well as older children, teens and adults. The activities that are specific to small children include a petting zoo and “Kidz Corral”, which offers agricultural oriented activities for small children.
